How to Protect Your Phone at the Beach

Reading time: 6 minutes

Ah, the beach—a place of sun, sand, and surf, where the worries of the world melt away with the soothing sound of the waves. But amid this idyllic setting, there's one thing that can quickly turn your beach day sour: a damaged or lost phone.

In this post, H2O Wireless shares tips on how to safeguard your device while you bask in the the sun's rays, ensuring your phone stays safe and functional.

1. Invest in a Waterproof Phone Case

One of the simplest and most effective ways to keep your phone safe at the beach is to use a waterproof phone case. These cases seal your phone completely, protecting it from water, sand, and even sunscreen.

Look for cases that are rated IP68, as they provide the highest level of protection against water and dust.

2. Use a Ziploc Bag

If you don't have a waterproof case, a heavy-duty Ziploc plastic bag can be a quick and inexpensive alternative. Make sure the bag is completely sealed before you head to the beach.

While not as robust as a waterproof case, a Ziploc plastic bag can still provide a decent barrier against sand and moisture.

3. Avoid Direct Sunlight

Leaving your phone in direct sunlight can cause it to overheat, potentially damaging the battery and internal components. Keep your phone in the shade as much as possible. Use a beach umbrella or place it inside a bag or beach towel to cool down when not in use.

4. Be Mindful of Sand

Sand can be surprisingly harmful to your phone, scratching the screen and getting into ports and crevices. It's particularly important to keep sand away from your phone's ports. If any finds its way into your charging port, your device could lose its ability to charge -- or stop functioning entirely.

To prevent sand from causing damage, always handle your phone with clean, dry hands. Consider using a microfiber cloth to wipe off any sand before using your phone.

5. Use a Screen Protector

A screen protector can shield your phone’s screen from scratches and minor impacts. If your beach activities include sports or other vigorous activities, a tempered glass screen protector offers more robust protection than a plastic one.

6. Keep Your Phone in a Secure Location

The beach is a busy place, and it’s easy for a phone to get lost or stolen. Keep your phone in a secure location, such as a zipped compartment in your beach bag. Avoid leaving it in plain sight when you’re not using it. And please, don't take it in the ocean!

7. Rinse and Dry After Use

If your phone does get exposed to sand or saltwater, rinse it off with fresh water as soon as possible. Saltwater, in particular, can be corrosive. Be sure to dry your phone thoroughly with a soft, lint-free cloth.

When you return from your beautiful beach journey, give your phone a quick cleaning. Employing a small can of compressed air is a popular choice, but Apple actually cautions against this approach, suggesting a "soft, slightly damp, light-free cloth" like a lens cloth instead.

8. Backup Your Data

Before heading to the beach, back up your phone’s data. In the event that your phone is lost or damaged beyond repair, you won’t lose important information like photos, contacts, and apps. Use cloud services or transfer your data to a computer or external hard drive.

9. Enable Find My Phone

In case your phone does get lost, make sure you have a tracking app enabled, such as Find My iPhone (for iOS users) or Find My Device (for Android users). These apps can help you locate your phone or remotely wipe its data if it falls into the wrong hands.

10. Consider Phone Insurance

Finally, if you frequently bring your phone to risky environments like the beach, consider investing in phone insurance. Many plans cover water damage, theft, and accidental drops, giving you peace of mind.
